Teens get 90 days in crash that killed family

HOUSTON — Two teens convicted of manslaughter in a Houston auto accident that killed a mother and her two children will spend 90 days in jail followed by probation.

Christopher Yovino, 18, and Brett Taylor, 17, were found guilty of three counts of manslaughter each Aug. 30. The jury initially sentenced them to probation only: eight years for Yovino and six years for Taylor. The judge added the sentence of 90 days in Harris County Jail for each of the teens.

Prosecutors said the two teens were street racing at the time of the Houston accident, speeding at more than 90 mph. The teens disputed that, saying they were driving only slightly over the 40 mph speed limit.

Mayra Torres and her two children, 14-year-old Christopher Nuno and 6-year-old Katia Nuno, were killed in the Houston crash.

The maximum possible sentence for the teens would have been 20 years in prison.
